August 2005

Hello

Just a quick note to let y’all know I am doing well. had my first rescue dive lesson today…actually a pretty funny story because I am being trained by a Thai navy seal at their marine base down on the cape of the island for free, well in exchange for speaking English the whole time. I had to hitchhike back up to the main town (mom and dad I promise this is perfectly safe here, it’s like jumping into the back of a corn truck in a tiny town in Iowa) and rode with a guy who just happened to be an officer of the navy seal division, and it just happened to come up in conversation, and next thing you know, everything’s worked out.

To boot it is across the street literally from the marine biology research center in which I will begin volunteering next week. I am teaching English about 25 hours a week to make ends meet, so everything is going well. The weather has been gorgeous, and of course my offer still stands to anyone who wants or needs a vacation. it’s low season here so the beaches are really deserted and things are really cheap (flights probably are too). I have officially withdrawn my peace corps application due to the health clearance issues, and plan to volunteer here and start graduate school in the fall (of course y’all know I have my heart set on Santa Cruz, but we’ll see where fate sends me.

Thanks to everyone for writing and I look forward to hearing more soon from all of you! Wishing you the best and missing you all madly!

Peace as always,

Lisa

Hobbs sent me an email reneging on his promise to write a story about the College World Series. I understand, though. It’s hard to write when you are constantly having the get up to go to another room.

Hey dude,

I had every intention of writing an article for your site; but the thought of having to re-think that whole debacle makes me sick. Maybe when TU is victorious in some other event.

I thought it would be in regards to the letter I sent them about my idea for a new video called “Women Remaining Civilized”. I was sadly mistaken.

This past Saturday, I was working on my tax deductions (…thank you Wilford Brimley) when I received a phone call. Ever since I suffered disillusionment at the hands of a heartless telemarketer recently, receiving telephone calls has just not been quite as thrilling. Still, I felt that it would be the responsible thing to do if I answered. I picked up and heard only silence at first. Then, a young man named Shawn came on the line. He was from “Girls Gone Wild” and he wanted to know if I was Kirk.

Once we got past the pleasantries, Shawn told me that “Girls Gone Wild” was conducting a survey in my area, and he asked if I would like a couple of complimentary DVDs for answering his questions. I declined the DVDs, but asked him what type of questions he wanted to ask. He told me that he wanted to know if I owned a VCR. I lied and told him I did not even own a television. Shawn did not even bother to bid farewell. He just hung up before I could toy with him. Who would have thought “Girls Gone Wild” would employ such rude individuals? Certainly not I.

This time we have 25, influential, and Hispanic

Time magazine seems to have this obsession with lists. Every week now, they have a mini list of the five best DVDs, books, or CDs of some theme that the reader needs to buy. Every so often, they seem devote an entire story (usually the cover story) about a list of people or things that all exhibit some characteristic. Sometimes it is celebrities or political personalities. Sometimes it is gadgets. This week it is Hispanic people.

Now, I am not going to question the wisdom of associating Alberto Gonzales and Jennifer Lopez on the same list. I am sure, in her own way, J-Lo exerts as much influence as one of GW’s closest advisors and Attorney General. It just seems that when Time puts these lists together, they condense who these people are and what they do into a middle school essay.

Perhaps I am just disgruntled. I mean, I can’t believe they left Mario Lopez off the list. A.C. Slater was a huge influence on my life. He had amazing dimples. You could grate cheese on those babies.

Amanda expresses dismay about some pictures I took.

So I was forced to look at your picture website today on my lunch break and through all of the wedding photos and the wedding prep photos and the wedding debriefing photos and the graduation photos, I have come to one conclusion: You will never take a picture of me again and Sister Sister is a great show. Yes, I am talking about those last two photos of Colleen and me at that restaurant, which I resisted. I think what cultures really meant when they were talking about soul stealing and photography, was that our essences are wasted reflecting on those photos and wondering who we are and if we are really that square jawed and manly in real life.

And as an addendum, you should have mentioned your sweaty chest in the picture with Jenny Kuo, instead all we get are some veiled references to dog crap. But, then again how many times can you talk about manly pectoral perspiration. I thought the wedding photos were good and I respected April’s wearing of the suit with the kick ass flower.

[Yada yada yada]

With that said, you are definitely not invited to Spirituality night where we would have baptized you and maybe even given you a red flavored sucker if you didn’t cry too much.

Bygones.

Hobbs learns about property law. Tomorrow it’s torts or in laymen’s terms, cakes.

Well, Hobbs left again before I got up for work. After I got home from work, he called and said we were going to meet with Tim for some Goode company. We went to eat. After that, we went back to Tim’s house. Hobbs went to a Starbucks to study. I went back to my apartment. What a wild evening. He was probably still working when I went to sleep.

Well, he worked hard that first night, but tonight is sure to be a blast.

Hobbs got up and left for his law class before I got up. Since I went to work out, he got home before I did and started looking up law school books online. We went to the grocery store to buy some food. We made a simple dinner of frozen pizza and salad. After dinner, Hobbs got down to work and I read in the den. He was still working when I went to sleep.
